Abstract

A method of manufacturing a core for a cricket or hockey ball comprises preparing a homogeneous rubber mix containing vulcanizing agents and fillers and a chemical substance such as ammonium carbonate or sodium bicarbonate which, under heat, is readily decomposable and gas-evolving, moulding the mix in a fluid-tight mould completely filled and closed and subjecting the closed mould to the heat and pressure necessary for vulcanization of the mix so as to produce a core which, to the naked eye, is free from porosity and from gaseous cells and inclusions. The vulcanized core is then coated with a rubber solvent and has moulded thereon a cover of guttapercha and leather shreds. Alternatively the core mix is moulded, coated with solvent and covered and the complete ball vulcanized together. Before vulcanizing, the core may have guttapercha chips impressed therein, which, on vulcanizing, produce a film of guttapercha on the core to promote bonding of the core and cover. Suitable mixes and vulcanizing data are described in the Specification. Specifications 221,708, [Class 132 (ii)], 453,185 and 638,913 are referred to. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 638,913.
