Abstract

655,225. Automatic circuit-breakers; thermal switches. PRICE & SON (STAMPERS), Ltd., T., 'and PRICE, E. E. Oct. 16, 1948, No. 26949. [Class 38((v)] A switch adapted to complete a circuit and to be opened automatically at the end of a predetermined time, comprises a bell-crank lever 14 pivoted at 15 and carrying connected contacts 24, 25. The lever is moved clockwise to close contacts 24, 28, by the momentary energization of an electromagnet 18 or by means of a cam acting on the part 16 of the lever, the contacts being held closed by an adjustablypivoted lever 33 which falls down on to a step 22 on the lever 14. Closure of contacts 24, 28 energizes the controlled circuit and also the heater 37 of a bimetal strip 35, which eventually bends up to lift the lever 33 above a step 21 on the lever 14, which is moved counter-clockwise by a spring 17 to open contacts 24, 28 and close 25, 31. The latter reclose the controlled circuit, but not that of heater 37, so that the bimetal cools down and, in bending back to its original position, engages the edge of step 22 and pushes the lever 14 back to its middle position shown, where all contacts are open, thus completing the cycle of operations. An adjustable weight 45 is placed on lever 33 so as to vary the time taken for the bimetal to lift the lever. The switch may be horizontally mounted if the lever 33 is spring-biassed.
