Abstract

1,250,773. Thermal switches. J. A. CRABTREE & CO. Ltd. 17 Nov., 1969 [23 Nov., 1968], No. 55684/68. Heading H1N. [Also in Division H2] A polyphase protective device responsive to overload and unbalanced conditions comprises bimetallic elements 15a in each phase, slidable members 7, 8 operated by the elements, a bellcrank 6 interconnecting the slidable members 7, 8 and operating an overcentre switch device 1, 2, 4, a reset plunger 31 which may be rotated for enabling hand or automatic reset, and adjusting means for the switch and the bell-crank. The bell-crank 6 is adjusted by a screw 40 which co-operates with a projection 7a from the member 7, this projection 7a abutting an ambient temperature compensating bimetal 19 to cause relative motion between the members 7, 8 and operation of the switch when balanced overload conditions exist. The switch has metal blades 1, 2 pivoted on a bracket 3 and maintained in an over-centre position by a C-spring 4. The position of the bracket 3 is adjusted by a screw 14 and one position of the blade 2 is determined by a screw 41. The screws 14, 40, 41 are adjusted on assembly, the overload setting by the user being effected by a manually operated lever which engages a further lever (both not shown) having a tooth entering a guide slot 26 in the bimetal 19 and a cam surface engaging the face of the bimetal. The switch has a moving contact 5 which engages a fixed contact 9, e.g. to complete the coil circuit of a motor starting contactor, or a fixed contact 10, e.g. in a signal circuit. When the plunger 31 is turned it cams the contact 10 from the manual reset position shown to a position nearer the contact 9 so that the switch resets when the bimetallic elements cool. Manual resetting is effected by depressing the plunger 31 to cause the contact 10 to move the switch back over centre, auxiliary series contacts 34 being opened by the plunger while resetting is being effected.
