Abstract

655,137. Pipe joints. DAWES, J. G. Sept. 2, 1948, No. 23107. [Class 99(i)] In a self-sealing pipe joint, a ring system which is placed between the spigot of one pipe 1 and the socket of the other pipe 2 comprises two rigid rings A, B, which have a mating, single tongue-and-groove configuration, are held apart by one or more resilient rings R<SP>1</SP>, R‹, which fill the space or spaces between the rigid rings and the walls of the pipes so that the area of the resilient material supporting the inner rigid ring B is less than the area of the inner rigid ring presented to the fluid in the pipes. As shown, the inner ring abuts a shoulder L on the pipe 2 and the ring A is screwed into the socket to compress the resilient rings. In a modification, Fig. 4 (not shown), a number of mating tongues and slots are formed and the single resilient ring is perforated to accommodate the tongues. The rings may be modified for conical-shaped spigot and socket members, Fig. 1 (not shown), and pegs, bolts, or clips may be used to retain the rings in position.
