Abstract
655,121. Sparking plugs. ROLLSROYCE, Ltd. May 19, 1948, No. 13612. [Class 7(iv)] [Also in Group XI] Ignition means for a gas turbine engine comprises a plurality of insulated rod electrodes arranged with their sparking tips adjacent the sparking surface of a common earthed rod electrode to form a plurality of spark gaps and a separate electrical high potential source for each insulated electrode whereby each is brought to its sparking potential independently of the others. The insulated electrodes 11, each connected to a battery 13, and the earthed electrode 12 are arranged so that their tips do not lie in a straight line. Two electrodes 11 may be aligned with one another and the third may be located at right angles to them in alignment with the earthed electrode. The means may be utilized in the ignition apparatus described in Specification 616,481, [Group XI]. According to the Provisional Specification the earthed electrode may be in the form of a coil through which is passed a low voltage current for heating and vaporizing the fuel to assist ignition.
