Abstract

A method of depositing material in a finely-divided state on a continuous surface according to a pattern, comprises depositing on the surface as a pattern an electrically-conductive coating, and electrically charging the coating so that the material is deposited on the coating and to a lesser extent or not at all on other parts of the surface. A fluorescent screen in a cathode-ray tube for use in colour television, is formed by depositing in turn on a support, by spraying or evaporation, a conducting layer, an insulating layer and through a stencil the pattern, for example in the form of two intermeshing zig-zags or combs. The conducting layers may be of platinum and the insulating layer of lithium borate or quartz. The insulating material exposed between the zig-zag patterns is then removed to expose underlying conducting layer. A different fluorescent material is then deposited, by a settling process or by spraying, on each conducting layer, to form a three-colour strip screen. The cathode-ray tube may be tilted to inhibit settling of the fluorescent material on the uncharged layers due to gravity. The material to be deposited may be irradiated with ultra-violet light so as to enhance the attraction of the material to the conducting layer. The invention may be applied to the spraying of cellulose lacquers. Specifications 592,860, [Group XL], and 634,702, [Group XL (a)], are referred to.
