Abstract

654,745. Couplings. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd. Oct. 15, 1948, No. 26831. [Class 38 (i)] [Also in Group XXII] Metallic end caps are applied to a cracked carbon resistor by moulding, casting or otherwise forming them in situ around the ends of the resistor. Fig. 2 shows one of two similar halves of a mould having a semi-cylindrical recess 6 containing a semi-cylindrical sleeve 7 in which a resistor rod 1 is laid. Grooves 8 may be provided for lead wires and when these and the other half of the mould are in place, molten metal is poured through an inlet 11 with branches 12, 13 leading to conical recesses 9, 10 at the ends of recess 6, in which the end caps are formed. The recesses 9, 10 are watercooled. With suitable additional feed channels the mould is applicable to the forming of metal bands on the body of the resistor.
