Abstract

653,717. Moulds; casting processes. WAHLSTROM, S. L. Oct. 7, 1948, No. 26207. [A Specification was laid open to inspection under Sect. 91 of the Acts, April 9, 1949.] [Class 83 (i)] An ingot mould 1 is provided with a feeder head 2 of sheet-metal surrounded with carbonaceous combustible material 3. This may consist of wood and either rest on the top of the mould or be, inserted therein. The head 2 extends partly or wholly within the mould and' either engages it or is spaced somewhat away from it, as shown in Fig. 3. In this case the head 2 may have a thickness up to 4 mm. at least at its lower edge to accelerate solidification of the molten metal between the head and mould. To delay combustion the material 3 may be enclosed in a cover 5, Fig. 7, which may be open at the bottom or at the top or at both top and bottom as shown in Fig. 11. As shown in this Figure, the cover may also be inclined so that it falls as the material 3 shrinks.
