Abstract

653,067. Finishing pile fabrics. WILTON ROYAL CARPET FACTORY, Ltd., and CLARKE, S. H. R. March 30,1948, No. 8983. [Class 42 (i)] Patterns in relief are produced on pile fabrics (e.g. carpets or rugs) by holding stationary a fabric which has a uniform pile height and clipping away those parts of the pile which are to be in lower relief by means of clippers moved, manually or automatically, over the fabric so as to contact only those areas which are to be clipped, leaving the parts in high relief at the original height. The clipping of the pile 1 may be of constant or varying depth; it may have a straight (Fig. 1), continuously-curved (Fig. 2) or wavy (Fig. 3) profile until it ceases abruptly at the outline 2 of some figure of the motif. The pattern may be marked on the fabric prior to clipping by the impression of a templet consisting of strip metal fixed on edge to a flat wooden backing; the pile is then clipped with manually- or motor - operated mechanical clippers. Alternatively, a templet without a backing may be laid on the pile and used to guide the operator, or clippers may be arranged to follow a templet automatically.
