Abstract

653,059. Suction cleaners. HOOVER, Ltd. Feb. 18, 1948, Nos. 4703 and 4704. Convention dates, March 8, 1947. [Classes 8(i) and 8(ii)] A suction cleaner includes filter shaking mechanism which in the released condition holds the filter extended but not under tension, and when operated first collapses the filter against the action of a spring, then snaps it taut under the action of the spring and holds it in tension for a moment prior to its release. The filter 30, Fig. 1, through which dust-laden air is drawn by a motor driven fan 23 which after drawing through a second filter 27 in series exhausts through a blower port 12, is secured at its closed free end to a U- shaped frame 36 pivoted to arms 38, 39, Fig. 3, themselves secured to a shaft 40. This shaft is biassed in an anti-clockwise direction by springs 45, 46 having ends 49, 50 abutting a tensioning member 52 also pivoted about the shaft 40. Limiting stops 53, 54 on the member 52 prevent the filter in its normal extended position from being subject to tension. The filter shaking mechanism comprises a slider 68 biassed by a spring 70 and carrying a tooth 65 which on the forward stroke retracts a filter bail 93 and so collapses the filter against the springs 45, 46 until the bail rides a ramp 62 whereon the filter returns with a snap action. The slider 62 is operated by a shaker lever 73 which is rocked about a fixed pivot 74 by an external floating pedal lever 77 connected to the lever 73 by a pivot 78 extending through a washer sealed slot and carrying a short arm 82. The lever 77, pivot 78 and arm 82 form a rigid unit and clockwise rotation relative to the lever 73 is limited by a stop 86, and the lever 82 is pivoted at 91 to a rod 90 pivoted at 92 to the tensioning member 52. Initial movement of the pedal about the pivot 78 extends the rod 90 and the member 52 to tension the filter, and further pedal movement rotates the shaker lever 73 to actuate the slider 68 and so collapse the filter 30. When the pedal is released the spring 70 returns the slider 68 and the rod 90 which latter rocks the tension member 52 so that the stops 53, 54 abut the arms 38, 39 to relieve the filter of tension. In a modification the slider is acutated by a single lever 73 movable about a fixed pivot and pivoted at one end to the slider 68 and at the other end to the rod 90 so that movement of both members 68, 90 occur simultaneously and continuously throughout the stroke of the slider. The chamber casing 10 is supported by skids 19 assisted by a curved surface 89 on the pedal arm 56. Specification 612,223 is referred to.
