Abstract

Fabrics composed of a highly polymerized polymethylene terephthalate having 2 to 10 inclusive carbon atoms in the polymethylene chain are treated with an aqueous solution of caustic soda or caustic potash. A reduction in weight and thickness, uniform throughout the material and bearing a relation to the time of treatment results. The treatment may take place under atmospheric pressure using solutions of between 4 and 20 per cent by weight of alkali. Preferably the treatment should take place at about 60 DEG C. If desired, the treatment may be carried out in a Kier pressure boiler, using lower concentrations of alkali metal hydroxide. Caustic soda is preferred to caustic potash. If desired, treatment may be carried out using a jig or winch. The fabrics of the invention may be used for electrical insulation purposes. In an example small test pieces of fabric woven from 45 denier polyethylene terephthalate yarn are boiled in 4 per cent aqueous caustic soda for periods of 1 and 1 1/2 hours, and the thickness and the breaking load of the warp yarns determined. A second example describes the treatment of a locknit fabric made from the same yarn in 4.6 per cent caustic soda at 91 DEG C. on a winch machine. Specifications 578,079 and 590,451 are referred to.
