Abstract
Fabrics comprising alkali-resistant yarn and yarn composed of a highly polymerized polymethylene terephthalate, wherein the polymethylene group contains 2-10 carbon atoms, are treated with caustic soda solution to remove at least some of the terephthalate yarn. The alkali-resistant yarn may be a twistless yarn and may be supported by the terephthalate yarn during the manufacture of the fabric, e.g. it may be supported by twisting the terephthalate yarn or filament round it. Cotton or regenerated cellulose yarn may be used as the alkali-resistant yarn. The terephthalate yarn or filament may be of a denier as fine as 10-15 and still have sufficient strength to support the twistless yarn. In the case of cotton fabrics containing terephthalate yarn, the latter may be removed by the caustic soda solution used in the usual kier boiling treatment, e.g. with a 0.8-2.0 per cent caustic soda solution under a pressure of 5-60 lbs. per sq. inch. Alternatively, an immersion of the fabric in a hot 4 per cent caustic soda solution may effect removal of the terephthalate yarn. The process may be used for producing cotton fabrics composed of twistless yarn, or decorative effects may be produced in woven, knitted or braided fabrics. Fabrics with twistless yarn in warp or weft or both may be obtained. The supporting yarn of terephthalate may be so fine that after it has been removed the yarns in the resulting fabric are still closely packed. In an example, a 10 denier yarn of polyethylene terephthalate is twisted round a 1/30 cotton thread so that the thread remains twistless. The yarn is woven to form a fabric which is then treated with 2 per cent caustic soda under heat and pressure for one hour. The terephthalate yarn is dissolved, leaving a fine, soft fabric of high strength. In another example, a fabric is obtained by weaving cotton thread, polyethylene terephthalate yarn being introduced as alternate weft threads over a portion of the fabric. The terephthalate threads are dissolved in caustic soda solution, and a fabric with a stripe of more loosely woven material is obtained. In another example, a similar fabric is treated with caustic soda under milder conditions so that the terephthalate threads are only partially removed. The resultant fabric has a stripe where some of the weft yarns are finer than others. Specifications 550,525, 578,079 and 590,451 are referred to.
