Abstract

652,684. Molding tiles. SAMSON, B., and SAMSON, W. C., (trading as SAMSON BROS.). Nov. 10, 1947, No. 29900. [Class 87 (ii)] Roofing tiles &,c. of concrete &c. are made by subjecting the material while loaded in a mould to a tamping action by an assembly of strickle bars which are reciprocated relatively to the mould, and to a final smoothing action by retaining the bars in a lowered position, in opposition to a lifting force, against the face of the material during the movement of the strickle bars in one direction. The tile 35a is moulded in a mould box 31, its lower face being formed by pallet 35 and its upper face by strickle bars 37 each of which is shaped in accordance with the desired cross-section of the tile. The pallet 35 is adjustably supported upon screw-threaded studs 36. The bars 37 (of cast iron) are attached to members 38 pivoted by pins 38a at their rear ends to arms 40 depending from a reciprocating carriage 11 guided longitudinally on rods 8. Rollers 13 provide bearings between the carriage 11 and bars 8. The forward ends of the bars 38 are rigidly secured to the lower side of a frame 41 having lateral extensions 42 which run on guides 9 and limit the downward movement of the strickle against the material. The strickle may be depressed by means of a handle 46 against the tension of a suspension spring 44. The carriage is reciprocated by means of a crank 19 and rod 21 driven by an electric motor 56 controlled by foot pedal 18. Upon completion of the tamping and smoothing action the pallet with the tile on it is ejected by means of a rod 51 which contacts a loose ejector plate 52. The rod is operated by a foot pedal 54. The apparatus may embody a circular turntable 24 carrying two, three or more radially disposed mould boxes 31 each having its own ejector 51 adapted to project through apertures 53 in the turntable. The turntable may be locked in position by means of a turret pin 26 which engages holes in the table rim. A pin (not shown), on a length of chain secured to each moulding box is passed through a hole in the pallet to form a tying wire hole 50a, Fig. 7, in a projection on the under side of the tile.
