Abstract

[Class 78 (iv)] [Also in Group XXXIII] A ship's crane is mounted on the base shown in plan in Fig. 2 and comprising girders 2, 3 projecting at the corners to provide overhanging portions 4 carrying rollers 5, 5<1>. The sets of rollers 5, 5<1> are adapted to travel each on one of two mutually perpendicular sets of rails on a ship's deck, the rollers not in use being retracted. As shown in Fig. 5, the carriage may be temporarily supported by screw jacks 14 at each corner, each jack comprising a threaded portion 16 engaging in a threaded collar 17 on the carriage and adapted to be turned by means of a squared head 15 projecting through a plate 9 (Fig. 2), at each corner of the carriage. Each roller 5 or 51 is mounted on a spindle 18 carried eccentrically by a pin 19 fast with a lever 20 having a fixing hole 21 for engagement with either of two locking holes 22, 23 in a flange of the carriage girder so that the roller may, when the carriage is raised by the jacks 14, be turned to and locked in the retracted or lowered position. When in use the crane is anchored in position by bolts 11 mounted in blocks 12 pivoted at 13 to the deck rails, which bolts engage in slots 10 in the plates 9, being locked in place by the nuts shown. The controls for the luffing jib and winding gear of the crane are mounted on a platform above the carriage.
