Abstract

1404135 Mobile tower cranes GENERAL CRANE INDUSTRIES Ltd 3 Nov 1972 [4 Nov 1971 16 March 1972] 51288/71 and 12480/72 Heading B8B In a method of erecting a telescopic structure such as a tower by means of an hydraulic piston and cylinder arrangement the structure is extended by supplying fluid at a first pressure to the cylinder and, when the structure has been extended thereby to an extent predetermined by wedging means, maintaining a fluid pressure in the cylinder at a higher pressure than the first pressure and adequate to maintain the structure in tension under any load carried by the structure in operation. As shown a crane includes a telescopic tower 12 extended by a multi-section hydraulic cylinder 30. A turntable 20 on top tower section 12d carries an operator's cab 21 and a telescopic jib 24 mounted for luffing by cylinders 25 on a platform 22 tiltable about a horizontal axis 22a by a cylinder 23. By operation of the cylinders 23, 25 30 and a pair of cylinders 18 the tower 12 and the jib 24 can be collapsed on to a trailer 10 for transport, the tower 12 being pivoted about bearings 14 to lie horizontally, Fig. 2 (not shown). In use the tower 12 is maintained extended by fluid pressure applied to the cylinder 30 in excess of the pressure required to sustain the total weight of the movable tower sections and parts carried thereby, including the maximum permitted load, thus maintaining the tower 12 in tension. Extension of the sections of the tower 12 is limited by interengaging means with a wedging effect on adjacent sections. As shown in Fig. 4 these means, between sections 12b, 12c are wedges 40b, 40b<SP>1</SP>, at the top of the section 12b, co-operating with mating wedges 41c, 41c<SP>1</SP> at the bottom of the section 12c, and also act to give lateral stability to the tower 12. Safety latches, such as 47, may be moved into position between adjacent tower sections to prevent collapse of the tower 12 in case of failure of the cylinder 12 or of the fluid pressure supply.
