Abstract

1374253 Mobile folding tower cranes GENERAL CRANE INDUSTRIES Ltd 3 May 1972 [6 May 1971] 13593/71 Heading B8B A mobile tower crane, Fig. 3, comprises a telescopic jib 44 mounted on a pivot 45 for luffing by a pair of luffing hydraulic cylinders 47 on a slewing turntable 33 at the top of a telescopic tower over an operator's cab 30. In order to fold the crane into its transport position, Fig. 2 (not shown), the retracted jib 44 is brought to a horizontal position, with the tower retracted by a rack-and-pinion mechanism, and swung alongside the tower by operation of levelling cylinder 51 which acts between the turntable 33 and a pivot 50 on jib support 43 to tilt unit 36 about a pivot 38. The tower and jib 44 is then swung into a horizontal position when upper section (26) of the jib can be slid through the base of the lower section (25) to reduce the overall length required by the vehicle. In a modification, Fig. 7 (not shown), the operator's cab (75) is mounted as part of the tiltable unit (36a) so as to slew with the jib (44a). In the embodiment shown in Fig. 8 a tilting unit 122 carries telescopic jib 124 and includes a gasoline engine/pump unit 127 on a platform 122<SP>1</SP> which is kept level during folding of the crane by conjoint operation of luffing cylinders 125 and tilting cylinders 123. In this case the tower 114 is folded down on to its semi-trailer mounting 110 by cylinders 115. Cylinder 116 extends and retracts the tower 114 and pressure may be mounted in the cylinder 116 to keep wedging surfaces (not shown) in engagement for greater rigidity of the tower 114 in use. In a further embodiment, Fig. 11 (not shown), the tower has three sections. Instead of a fixed counterweight, such as 54 in Fig. 3, a movable counterweight (not shown), slidable on rails under automatic or manual control to minimize the bending moment on the tower, may be provided. The tilting cylinders, such as 51 in Fig. 3 may be associated with a safety device indicating overload or tipping conditions.
