Abstract

In a cigarette comprising a mouthpiece in the form of a hollow tube or a plug of filtering or flavouring material, the cylindrical surface of the tube or plug is coloured, either (a) to show which is the tipped end and to obscure fragments of tobacco lodged between the plug and the paper, or (b) to similate tobacco when seen through the paper so that the length of the plug cannot be ascertained. A suitable machine for making the stubs in continuous rod form is described in Specification 462,540, the reel of paper being previously coloured, or stained or coloured as it passes through the machine. A table of suitable colours is given, but a brownish colour is preferred. The surface may be mottled and in the case of (b) the tipped end is indicated by making the body of the plug of light material so that the ends of the cigarette differ in colour, or by printing rings round the paper.
