Abstract

The paper of a mild cigarette is printed at the tip of the cigarette with an impact producing substance or the front of the tip is injected with such a substance. In the result the cigarette does not lack impact when first lit.

Description

SPECIFICATION Cigarettes BACKGROUND TO THE INVENTION This invention relates to cigarettes in which a mixture of tobacco is enclosed in a paper tube with a filter attached to its back end. In socalled "mild" or "light" cigarettes when the front end is lit, the product reaching the smoker is diluted with air as a result of the porosity of the paper and also by filtration by the tobacco rod and the filter itself. Such a cigarette lacks impact and taste during the first few puffs.

It is an object of the invention to improve the effect of the first few puffs.

SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION The present invention provides a mild cigarette at least part of the front end of which has been impregnated with a substance which on lighting up of the cigarette produces a smoking impact. The substance could be a flavouring substance, In the preferred form of the invention the substance is an extract of tobacco fermented with bacteria under anaerobic conditions.

The substance may be printed on the paper forming the tube so that around the front end of the cigarette the paper is impregnated with it.

Alternatively the substance may be injected into the front tip of the cigarette as by means of a needle inserted into the front end, by blowing into the front end or by sucking from the back end with the front end connected to a source of the substance.

DESCRIPTION OF EMBODIMENTS In one embodiment of the invention the paper going to a making machine is passed through a rotary applicator which coats the paper along its two edges with an extract of tobacco fermented with bacteria under anaerobic conditions. From the applicator the paper passes in a loop long enough to cause the substance to dry and from the loop it is passed to the conventional paper feeder for the making machine.

In a second embodiment cigarettes on a transfer drum pass in steps past a needle which reciprocates to and fro and the needle penetrates the front tip of the cigarette. The needle is fed from a dosing device so that about 0,04ml of the extract is injected into the cigarette.

In both cases the resulting cigarettes do now show the defect of lack of impact when first lit.

2. The cigarette claimed in claim 1 in which the paper around the front end of the cigarette has been printed with the substance.

3. The cigarette claimed in claim 1 in which the substance is injected into the front tip of the cigarette.
