Abstract

651,398. Chain stops. COMMERCIAL BOATS, Ltd., and JONES, A. H. LINDLEY-. July 7,1947, No. 17937. [Class 78 (ii)] A mooring device for boats comprises a guiding surface (e.g. roller 14) having grooved out cones 17 and 18 for a chain 15 and adapted to locate the chain so that one set of alternate links in contact therewith is disposed in a substantially vertical plane and the other set of alternate links in a plane at right angles to such vertical plane ; and a pivoted pawl member 21 secured to a fixed part 11 of the device in offset relationship to the guiding surface and adapted to co-operate with and engage in between the links of the chain in the manner of a ratchet and pawl mechanism so as to permit holding of the chain against movement in the reverse direction. As shown, pawl 21 is pivoted at 20 to bracket 11 adapted at 27 to be fixed to a ship's post, and engages in a transverse link of chain 15 as it passes round grooved roller 14. The pawl 21 has faces 23-24 shaped to engage the vertical links and abuts against stop 26 to prevent movement of chain to the right whilst permitting movement to the left. A finger lug 25 allows the pawl to be lifted to permit movement to the right when required. Ring 28 is for receiving a stay wire. Alternatively the device may be fitted with a base for securing to the deck.
