Abstract

651,137. Hydraulic shock-absorbers. GABRIEL CO. April 2, 1948, No. 9329. Convention date, May 13, 1947. [Class 108(iii)] In a direct double acting hydraulic shock absorber the piston of which has an upper portion 28 of reduced diameter provided with axially-extending peripheral grooves 43 and a lower cylindrical portion 27, the portion 28 having a threaded opening on which the threaded end of the piston is screwed, a packing r i n g 50 being mounted on the portion 28 and normally being held in engagement with the portion 27 by a spring 54 which abuts a disc-like member 45 secured on the piston rod, the piston rod is provided adjacent its threaded end with a cir- .cumferential groove 26 the threads extending into the groove and being of a depth not greater than the depth of the groove. The disc 45, Fig. 2, is threaded at 48 to pass over the threads of the piston rod and is of less thickness than the width of the groove 26. Radial arms 46 form the abutment for the spring 54, so that the disc 45, which is of such thickness as to be freely rotatable in the groove, may be clamped against rotation between a wall of the groove and the free end of the smaller piston portion. The periphery of the portion 27 if formed with a series of axiallyextending grooves 30 the depth of which increases towards the lower end of the piston. Alternate grooves 43 are connected by respective bores 44 with the inner bore 42 of the portion 28. The bore 42 is connected by a bore 39 with a counterbore in the portion 27. Flow through the bore 39 is controlled by a valve 41a the seat of which is formed with bleed notches 41. The spring 54 bears on the packing ring 50 through a carrier ring 51.
