Abstract
1,005,856. Telescopic dampers. GIRLING Ltd. May 23, 1963 [June 30, 1962], No. 25190/62. Heading F2S. A fluid-filled single-tube telescopic damper has a reciprocating piston 12 with a valve 21 which controls the flow of fluid through the piston in both directions and is adjustable by means of a screwed nut 24 in threaded engagement with the piston rod 13; the nut 24 having means 26 whereby, when the damper is extended, the nut is keyed by the lug 26 to holes 27 and a dished washer 28 non- rotatably associated with the end-closure 15 of the cylinder 10, so that the axial position of the nut may be adjusted by relative rotation between the cylinder 10 and piston-rod 13 to vary the loading on the valve 21. The valve 21 consists of one or more annular plates or shims which on their outer periphery seat on an annulus 22 on the piston and on their inner periphery seat at 23 on the nut 24. A passage 25 extends from the valve through the piston and a bleed orifice 29 is provided through the nut for flow independent of the valve 21. A floating piston 18 with an O-ring seal isolates the upper end of the cylinder. The projecting portion of the piston rod 13 is protected by a boot 16.
