Abstract

649.971. Feeding yarn. SCOTT & WILLIAMS, Inc. March 19. 1946, No. 8474. Convention date, April 23, 1945. [Class 120(ii)] [Also in Group VIII] A strand furnishing device comprises a pair of co-operating strand-feeding cones making line contact with each other, said strand-feeding cones having smooth surfaces one of which is covered with a resilient material and at least one of said cones having strand engaging notches, and strand guiding means comprising a thread arm mounted for oscillation under variations in thread demand, and a thread guide member connected to the thread arm and constrained to move in a path which is substantially a straight line at right angles to the path of the thread in passing from it to the strand feeding cones. As a pivoted arm 41 (of which there may be more than one) oscillates, in accordance with the yarn demand a thread-guide member 46 connected thereto is moved up and down to vary the position of the yarn along the line of contact between strand-feeding cones 22, 36, and thereby to vary the rate of feed. The yarn is passed under one of loops 72, to limit the movement of arm 41 necessary to re-enter the yarn between the cones after temporary cessation of the feed. The cone 22, which is comparatively shallow axially, is positively driven and is provided with a resilient cover of cork and rubber composition, or the like. The cone 36 is carried, by means of its shaft, on a pivoted bracket 26, and is pressed against cone 22 by a spring pressed plunger. Apical notches or slashes 76 on one of the cones engage the yarn and whip it into feeding position after a period of interrupted feed; an arm 37 directs the strand between the cones and prevents it passing to the wrong side of the cone 36. The entire mechanism may be duplicated as shown, only one feeding yarn at any one time. Stop motion.-Over the normal range of movement of the arms 41 the roller 53 or 57, at the end of rocking lever 52 or 56, rides on a concentric portion of a cam 44 on the associated roller arm 41, but when the strand being fead breaks, or becomes excessively tight, that arm 41 is rocked until the associated roller rides down off the concentric part of the cam and the other end, 53 or 58 of the rocking lever trips a micro-switch 60, to stop the machine.
