Abstract

720,751. Stop mechanism for textile machines. PRINCE-SMITH & STELLS, Ltd. Feb. 24, 1953, No. 5142/53. Class 120 (2). In a stop mechanism for a textile machine in which stock is fed forward for treatment by a pair of feed rollers one of which is movable transversely of its axis, and means responsive to the presence or absence of stock under tension is provided at a point in the run of the stock after it leaves the feed roller, there is an eccentric or cam member provided which is freely rotatable about the axis of one of the feed rollers and has an active profile capable of being brought by an initial rotation of the eccentric or cam member under the control of the responsive means into engagement with a circular part which rotates with the other feed roller, the last mentioned feed roller being continuously rotated so that the circular part imparts further rotation to the eccentric or cam member when thus engaged the active profile of the eccentric or cam member being so shaped that such further rotation brings successive parts of its profile of progressively increasing throw or lift into engagement with the circular part and thereby forces the movable feed roller away from the other feed roller. As shown stock 16, 19 passing through feed roller 10 and 11 and delivery rollers 17 and 18 is felt by a feeler 28 which is pivoted about an axis slightly inclined to the vertical upon an arbor 29 in a bracket 34 such that the feeler is gravity biased into contact with the stock 19. In the event of absence of stock 19 the feeler 28 swings anti-clockwise as shown in Fig. 5 such that a striker plate 35 having an oblique edge 36 mounted on the feeler 28 is brought into the path of a striker 37 mounted on a rockshaft 38. Engagement between the striker 37 and the oblique edge of the plate 35 forces the feeler 28 further in the anti-clockwise direction and causes a tappet screw 31 on the rearwardly extending arm 30 of feeler 28 to contact the lever 32 and cause anticlockwise rotation of the crank 33. The crank 33 engages the latch extension 44 and thus rotates the latch 24 out of engagement with the blade 23. The cam member 20 stem 22 and blade 23, thus released, rotate clockwise (Fig. 1) under the action of gravity until they assume the chain-line position of Fig. 3 in which the active surface 21 of the cam member 20 contacts the shaft 12 of feed roller 10. Rotation of shaft 12 then causes further rotation of cam member 20 and the increasing throw of the cam member 20 causes separation of the feed rollers. At the same time the blade 23 firmly nips the stock 16 between itself and the anvil or comb 26.
