Abstract

724,689. Stop-motions. PRINCE-SMITH & STELLS, Ltd. March 2, 1953, No. 5732/53. Class 120 (2). A textile machine having a stop motion of the kind comprising a feeler that is biased to tend to move from one side to the other across the run of stock but is normally precluded by the presence of stock under tension from moving to the said other side is characterized in that the feeler is repetitively or cyclically first so actuated and retained against its bias by a continuously driven part of the machine as to be clear of the run of stock and then released to permit movement under its bias towards and (in the absence of stock under tension) beyond the run of stock. As shown a feeler 24 is pivoted about a non-vertical axis by an arbor 25 carried in a bracket 26 and has attached thereto a striker plate 27 of V-shape. A striker 29, mounted for oscillation on a shaft 30 and oscillated by means of the crank 31 with a roller 32 at its end and the roller 33 at the end of a crank 34 keyed to shaft 35 which may be rotating continuously or rocking, periodically, contacts the surface 28 of the striker plate 27 and thus oscillates the feeler 24 into and out of its stock feeling position shown in chain-dotted lines in Fig. 3. Should the stock be absent when the feeler 24 tries to contact it the feeler swings over beyond the position shown in Fig. 3 and the striker 29 on its next movement contacts the other side 37 of the plate 27 and forces the feeler over to the position shown in Fig. 4. The feeler 24 has a rearward extension 38 provided with an adjustable tappet screw 39 which co-operates with a lever 40 mounted on a pivoted crank member 41. Actuation of this crank member through movement of the lever 40 rotates the latch member 21 about its pivot 22 and thus disengages the latch from under the blade or hammer 20 which falls under the action of gravity and clamps the stock 16 against the anvil 23. The movement of lever 40 may be used to initiate any other desired operation or change of operation of the machine. In a second embodiment cam means are used for controlling the movement of the feeler 24. Specification 720,751 is referred to.
