[Class 37] [Also in Group XXXVII] An electric motor X is started when a pushbutton S is actuated to energize a coil F1 of an electromagnetically-operated carbon pile regulator. The armature H rises to close contacts Q short-circuiting the push-button, and a spring P is compressed to move a dashpot member L and a bridge K which first completes the motorcircuit and then compresses the piles A. When the member K has moved a predetermined distance it trips a latch S and allows a spring T to close contact R, so connecting the motor directly to the line. A limit switch V is operated by the contact R to introduce an economy coil F2. The regulator is then held in its closed position by the combined action of coils F1, F2 and series coil G. The motor may be used to start an aircraft engine, so that, when the engine fires and the current in coil G falls, the regulator operates to disconnect the motor. The motor may also be stopped by means of a push-button. A protective time switch and an overload device may be provided.
