Abstract

784,400. Starting and stopping prime-movers. BROGAN, P. J. June 15, 1955 [June 18, 1954], No. 18004/54. Class 38 (4). Relates to a remote control system for starting and stopping an electric generator set driven by a diesel engine, the generator having starter windings 8 incorporated therein. A fuel control lever 6 is spring-loaded into the position, and an engine decompressor lever 2 is likewise biased into the position of full compression. When the engine is running and it is desired to stop it, a control button 10 is depressed for a short period and then released. Upon closure of the electromagnetic switch 9, a solenoid 1 does not operate since it is subjected to the difference of the voltages developed by the starter windings and by battery 7. The solenoid 5, however, receives the high backelectromotive force of the windings 8 and operates against spring 11 to suspend fuel injection, an interlock 4 retaining the lever 6 in the " stop " position. To start the engine, the control button is again depressed for a short period, so that closure of switch 9 energizes windings 8 and solenoid 1 decompresses the engine. The device 4 is actuated by cable 3 to release the lever 6 which is spring-returned to the " run " position against the effect of the solenoid 5. In an alternative arrangement, the solenoid 5 is sufficiently powerful when the engine is being started to operate against the spring 11. The lever 6 is then held in the " stop " position until the button 10 is released. A frame or box carrying the solenoids 1 and 5, as well as the interlocking device 4, may be mounted on the engine, cables being provided to couple the lever 2 to the solenoid 1 and lever 6 to the solenoid 5, Fig. 1 (not shown). A shunt may be provided for the coil of solenoid 1 to relieve it of part of the heavy starting current. When starting under cold conditions, the engine is motored under full compression for a short period. For this purpose, a relay responsive to a predetermined value of generator voltage is adapted to short-circuit the solenoid 1 and return the lever 2 to the " full compression " position when the crankshaft reaches its normal starting speed, Fig. 2 (not shown).
