Abstract

649,526. Uniting by fusion; soldering and brazing. ROSS & PARTNERS, Ltd., D., and ROSS, D. June 27, 1947, No. 17052. [Class 83 (iv)] In soldering, brazing or welding wires, rods or strips, particularly fine wires, the wires are clamped between two pairs of carbon or like bad conducting electrodes, electric current being passed through the pairs of electrodes. On a box a, housing a transformer, is fixed a metal base f provided with channels in which two carbon electrodes g<SP>1</SP>, g<SP>2</SP> are fixed by screws h, the base being connected by a lead e to one terminal of the transformer. Co-operating with the electrodes g<SP>1</SP>, g<SP>2</SP> are a pair of electrodes l<SP>1</SP>, l<SP>2</SP> fixed in arms k<SP>1</SP>, k<SP>2</SP>, which are pivoted on a bracket i insulated from the base, the bracket being connected by lead d to the other transformer terminal. The arms are adjustable by screw means m against the action of springs n. The electrodes l<SP>1</SP>, l<SP>2</SP> which are connected to the arms through copper or other good conducting strips o are inclined or mounted in inclined grooves in the arms so as to produce point or line contact with the work. The inner ends of the faces which may be grooved or channelled and may also be flattened off to increase the length of work held between the electrodes. The two pairs of electrodes are separated by a central space x so that prefluxed brazing or welding filler wire may be brought down into contact with the heated ends of the work.
