Abstract
661,202. Electric welding; sobering; joints. DUCH, G. V. A., and DUCH, M. A. Feb. 1, 1949, No. 2737/49. [A Specification was laid open to inspectiion under Sect. 91. of the Acts, Oct. 10, 1949.] Class 83 (iv). A process for electrically butt-welding or butt-soldering wires, cables, tubes, plates, &c. consists in shaping the end of one or both of the conductors u and v into a sharp or bevelled edge o, pressing the ends together, shielding them from the air and passing a low-voltage current through the conductors to fuze them together by coalescence. As applied to an aluminium conductor v and copper contact-rod u, the rods are gripped in pincer jaws M2 and M1 and pressed into contact by a spring (not shown). A disc p of tin or tin alloy solder may be interposed between the conductors u and v which are surrounded by an air-excluding sleeve c of metal or refractory material and the end o of rod u covered with a flux. On passing the current, which is at not more than 3 volts, the disc melts and a stannic aluminium bronze is formed which unites the conductors u and v and sleeve c. The sleeve c may afterwards be removed by grinding or filing or by splitting and pulling it off. Alternatively, the ends of the conductors may project into a container maintained under a vacuum or supplied with inert gas such as nitrogen, a reducing gas such as hydrogen, or a mixture of the two.
