Abstract

649,480. Discharging rockets from aircraft. AKTIEBOLAGET BOFORS. Sept. 7, 1948, No. 23554. Convention date, Nov. 7, 1947. [Class 9 (ii)] A device for discharging rockets comprises a container 1 fitted with discharge tubes 2 each housing a rocket, the container being of cylindrical form and provided with a detachable streamlined nose-piece. The tubes are rigidly fixed in the casing and to each other. At the forward end the container or casing is closed by a nosepiece made in two halves 3, 4 having loops 5 engaging hooks 6 on the casing, the halves being held together by brackets 7, 8 connected by a cylinder 9. The cylinder contains an explosive charge 12, e.g. black powder and is closed by cap-pieces 10, 11. One cap-piece 10 accommodates an electric igniter 13, while the other piece is secured by a weak pin 14. The rear of the container is closed by a torpedo-shaped cap 15 having a loose tip 16. The container is secured to an aeroplane by vertical stays 17, 18 connected by stays 19, 20. The rockets are discharged by closing the circuit to the igniter 13 in the cylinder 9, thereby forcing off the endpiece 3, 4 and closing the circuit to discharge the rockets. The rockets are discharged in groups, the grouping being arranged to cause the minimum disturbance to adjacent rockets. The first rocket discharged blows off the tip 16 and subsequently the cap 15 bursts. The rear stay 18, Fig. 4, contains a charge 21 and an electric igniter 22, the stay being weakened by a groove 23, so that on firing the igniter 22 the stay fractures. When all the rockets have been discharged the circuit to the igniter 22 is closed, the charge 21 fired and the stay 18 fractured, whereupon the stay 17 becomes detached and the whole casing falls away from the aircraft. A safety device may be provided so that the circuit to the igniter 13 will not close until the two halves of the nose-piece have been closed together and an insulating member withdrawn.
