Abstract
712,030. Projectiles. MILLER, T. W. Feb. 6, 1945 [June 5, 1944], No. 10756/44. Class 9(1) A mortar bomb of streamline form comprises a recess at the root of the tail to hold the primary cartridge 13 of the propelling charge. The cartridge is fired by a striking pin 12 slidable in the spine of the tail which is shaped to continue the streamline form of the bomb. The pin 12 forces the cartridge against a firing pin 16. Vents 23 allow the cartridge 13 to fire the secondary propelling charges which are tied with the aid of apertures 26 between the fins 10 of the tail, or slots 27 may be used which allows the cord to be blown off the tail and consequently does not impede the flight of the bomb. A safety pin 17 is withdrawn before firing. A crushable ballistic cap 3 is screwed on to and covers the percussion fuse 4 of the blasting explosive 25.
