Abstract

649,463. Fastenings. MILES, Ltd., H.G., BOOLE, R., B. E. T. FEDERATION, Ltd., TWIDLE, A., and GOUGH, F. J. June 29, 1948, No. 17394. [Class 44] In a releasable fastening device for securing one member to another, such as a hinged bonnet panel 10, Fig. 1, to the car frame, comprising a rigid member 7 on the frame engaging a groove 6 or indent in a rubber or like stud 2 which projects from the panel 10, the stud is furnished with a rigid operating member 8 bonded thereto and projecting therefrom for manually deflecting the stud to facilitate its engagement. The stud 2, which is of circular cross-section is bonded at its inner end 4 to a plate 1 secured by rivets 11 or bolts to the panel 10. An annular reduced portion 5 of the stud projects into a circular hole in the plate 1 and may have its peripheral surface bonded thereto. On pressing upwards the operating member 8, which may be a cylindrical rod or tube extending axially into the stud, a bent-over portion 9 of plate 1 providing a thumb grip, the stud is deflected downwardly from the dotted position a to that indicated by dot and dash lines c. After the yoke 7 has passed over the tapered end 6a of the stud, the member 8 is released and the yoke engages the peripheral groove 6. The yoke, which is secured by its legs to the frame, may have a straight or semicircular cross-bar, or the yoke may bave a projection to engage a corresponding indent in the stud. In a modification the stud end is pherical and the base plate is secured on the inner side of the panel, a separate plate being secured on the outer side to provide the thumb grip.. In a further modification the operating member projects axially from the stud end remote from the base plate. In another embodiment, Fig. 4, the stud is formed with parallel flats 17 on opposite sides to produce upper and lower longitudinally arcuate grooves 18, 19. A cranked manipulating part 16 is bonded to the rubber stud only at its headed end 14. On rotating the end of part 16, the stud is torsionally stressed to present one flattened face 17 to the yoke cross-bar to facilitate engagement and upon release the bar engages with. one of the grooves 18 or 19, In a modification of this embodiment described in the Provisional Specification the part 16 within the stud may be eccentric to its axis. In the embodiment shown in Fig. 10, the aperture 21 in the attachment plate through which a part 22 of the stud extends is eccentric to the stud axis. The operating member is cranked at 23 and provided with a handle 24. When the handle 24 is rotated, the stud is deflected to engage the yoke cross bar. To eliminate externally protruding parts, an operating plate 28, Fig. 11, may be housed within the bonnet, and accessible through a hole 33 in the panel 30. The plate 28 which may be fluted as at 31 is bonded to a rubber disc 27 and stud 26, a reinforcing metal rod 32 rigid with the plate, being bonded within the stud 26. An attachment plate 29 bonded to the disc 27 is secured to the panel 30. Specification 617,806 is referred to.
