UNITED STATES 1,500,253 PATENT OFFICE.
FRED A. MILLER, or s TiIlouIs, MISSOURI, ASSIGNOR or ONE-HALF To BENJAMIN n.
a TATE, or sT. LOUIS, M ssooaI.
YnIvET HOLDING Ann SETTING TooL.
Application flled December 14,1923. SerialNo. 680,644.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRED. A.MILLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of St. Louis, State of Missouri, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Rivet Holding and Setting Tools, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part thereof.
This invention relates generally to tools and, more particularly, to a certain new and useful improvement in tools of the type adapted for manual manipulation in the holding and setting of rivets.
Many difierent kinds- 0f rivet-work, such, for instance, as the renewal of riveted linings upon automobile transmission and brake-bands, are today carried on in rel atively small machine-shops" where the business idone does not permit or warrant the equipment including an expensive or costly machine-riveter; and it is the chief object of my present invention to provide an inexpensive, durable, manually manipulative toolrcapable of effecting riveting-operations withsafety, convenience, and efliciency.
With the above and other objects in view, my present invention resides in the novel features of form, construction, arrangement, and combination of parts hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims.
In the acompanying drawing,
Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of a rivet-holding and setting tool embodying my invention;
Figure 2 is an elevational view of the tool; Figure 3 is an elevational view of the main or body-portion of the tool; and
Figure 4 is an inverted end view of the body of the tool.
Referring now more 'indetail and by reference characters to the drawing, which illustrates a preferred embodiment of my invention, the main or body-portion of the tool is preferably in the form of a suitably elongated hollow cylindrical or tubular member 1 having a bore intermediate its ends, as at 2, of a diameter to snugly lengthwise accommodate a reciprocable plunger 3. At its lower end, the bore of body 1 is slightly reduced in diameter, as at 2', to provide an annular seat, as at 4, for the extreme marginal rim-portion only of the head 5 of a rivet R, and in approximately the plane of the rivet-seat 4, the
'5 of the rivet R."
body-member 1 is upon one side transversely cut-away or slotted, as at 6, and also upon the same side from the slot 6-to its lower end longitudinally cut-away, as at 7, to permit convenient placement of the rivet R in the body'l, with its head 5-upon the seat 4 and its prongs 8 presented outwardly for setting operation, as illustrated in Figure 1.- At its lower portion, the plunger 3 is correspondingly reduced in diameter, as shown, for reciprocation in the reduced bore 2' of the body 1 and upon its lower end is preferably suitably ooncaved, as: at 9, to correspond with-the convexity of the'head At its-upper portion, the body 1 is counterbore'd, as atl'O, for accommodatinga springbody 1 and coiled about'the plunger 3 with its lower end abutting against the collar 11,fis'a spring 12.
' Threaded upon the upper end of-the body '1 and providing at its end-wall 13 a abutment or collar 11 fixed on the plunger *3 intermediateits sends, and fitting :in' the In use and operation, the plunger 3 is v suitably manually or otherwise manipulated against the tension of spring 12, to locate its lower end above the plane of the seat 4 to permit the placement in the tool of a rivet R. The plunger 3 is then released to yieldingly engage the rivet to hold the same to its seat. The tool is then manipulated to properly locate the rivet-prongs 8 upon the work, when by means of an impacting blow delivered upon the upper end of the plunger 3, the plunger 3 will be driven downwardly and the rivet R driven from the tool with the marginal rim of its head 5 sheared off and its prongs 8 seated in and clinched or-upset upon the work. Y
My new tool is simple, compact, and inexpensive in form and construction, is conveniently manipulated upon and in connection with the work, and is exceedingly efiicient in the performance of its intended functions.
I am aware that minor changes in the form, construction, arrangement, and combination of the several parts of my new tool may be made and substituted for those herein shown and described without depart ing from the nature and principle. of my invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A riveting tool comprising a tubular body, a rivet-head seat at one end of said body comprising a recess adapted to receive the marginal portion of the head of a rivet, and a plunger cooperating with said rivethead seat adapted to shear off thatportion of the rivet not received in said head seat and set the same.
2. A riveting tool comprising a tubular body, a rivet-head seat at one end of said body comprising a recess adapted to receive the marginal portion of the head of a rivet. and a plunger cooperating with said rivethead seat adapted to hold the rivet in said seat and to shear off that portion of the rivet not received in said rivet-head seat and set the same.
3. A riveting tool comprising a tubular body, a rivet-head seat at one end of said body comprising a recess adapted to receive the marginal portion of the head of a rivet, and a spring-pressed plunger-reciprocable in the body and cooperating with-said rivethead seat adapted to hold the rivet in said seat and to shear ofi? that portion of the rivet not received in said rivet-head seat'and set the same the force of an impacting blow delivered upon its upper end to shear ofi' that portion of the rivet not received in said rivet head seat and set the same. 1
5. A riveting tool comprising a tubular body, a rivet-head seat at one end of said body comprising a recess adapted to receive themarginal portion of the head'of a rivet, the body being slotted and cut away at said end in communicationwith said seat for seating the rivet, an end cap disposed upon the other end of the body, a plunger reciproca'ble in the body and through the end wall of the cap co-operating with said rivet head seat, and a spring disposed in the body and about the plunger and engagingthe plunger and the end wall of the cap for yieldingly retaining the plunger in projected position, the plunger being adapted under the force of an impacting blow delivered upon its upper end to shear ofi that "portion of the rivet not received in said seat and set the same.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification. I
FRED. A. MILLER.
