' enlarged scale; and
. JOHN M. BESZCZAK, F WOBURN, MASSACHUSETTS.
This invention relates to improvements in wrenches, and it is the principal I object of the invention to provide a V wrench with means for locking the" movable member to the stationary member of the wrench in any of'its adjusted positions.
- Another object of the invention is the provision of awrench with simple and'inexpensive locking means conveniently operated.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a wrench provided with novel and improved means for conveniently adj usting the relative positions of its members.
These and other objects and advantages of the invention willbecome more'fullyknown as the descriptionthereof proceeds, and will pended claim.
In the accompanying drawing, forming a material part of this disclosure:
.Fig. 1 is a sectional side elevation of a wrench constructed according to the present invention;
Fig. 2 isa bottom plan view thereof; 7
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary detail view of the wrench, partly Fig. at is a cross-section on line 4 4 of Fig. 3.
The wrench comprisesthe stationary member having a longitudinally extending chamber 11in its body in which is displacepin 20, a lever 21 having atone end an upstandingtooth or finger 22 (two being shown in Fig. 3) adapted to grip between the teeth of the rack 18. A leaf spring 23, having its material bent upon itself, has one of its in section and on any MONKEY WRENCH.
Application filed May 29, 1925. Serial No. 33,628.
shanks attached to the upper wall of cham ber 19 while its lower shank rests against the upper lip of handle lever 21.
Tliepin carries at one end a knurled knob 24'and at its opposite end a washer or collar 25, while intermediate its ends it carries cams 25 adapted to be disposed in the circular apertures 24 of the body member 10 allowing a more or less compression of spring 23 to facilitate the adjustment of the movable member.
, The position'of the pin 20 may be very.
slightly changed bya very slight turn of the knob 24 for the purpose of tensioning the spring 23 if desired, or materially changed by, a 180 rotation of the knob 2& for positioning the handle lever 21 in the chamber 19 to prevent further depression thereof into the chamber. When the handle lever 21 is thus positioned in the chamber 19 w it is impossible to further depress it for disengaging the tooth 22 of the lever from the teeth 18 of the rack, thuslocking the parts in adjusted position.
The operation of my device will ly clear from the above description. If it is desired to applythe wrench to an object, the handle 21 is pressed inwardly by the hand against the action of leaf-spring 23, to disengage tooth or teeth 22 from the rack 18 and the jaws of the wrench may then be conveniently and suitably adjusted to grip the objecttherebetween, whereupon the grip of the hand on lever or handle 21 is released, so that the finger 22 will again engage the rack, and lock the parts in their relative adjusted positions.
It will be understood that I have illustrated and described one of the many forms of construction of my wrench as an examplefonly, and that such changes may be madeas{ fall within the scope of the appended claim without departure from the spirit and principle of the invention. 7
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is, as follows:
I In a wrench of the class described, a chambered' body member provided with circular apertures, a pintle pin comprising eccentric be entirecam elements for engaging said circular apertures, a locking lever pivotally mounted on said pintle pin and disposed in the (11121111- ber of said body, a spring disposed under one end of said lever adapted to project the same outwardly from said chamber, said projected end being adapted to be depressed for disengaging the opposite end of said lever, and means for rotating said pin to position the projected end of said lever in 10 said chamber to prevent depression thereof. In testimony whereof I have aflixed my signature.
JOHN M. BESZCZAK.
