Abstract
649,380. Coating biscuits &c. MACFARLANE, R. F., and BAKER PERKINS, LTD. Dec. 30, 1948, No. 33541. [Class 28(i)] A sugar icing &c. coating is applied to biscuits &c. by bringing the upper surface of the latter into adhering contact with the underlap 3a of an endless travelling band 3, said underlap being supplied with a continuous layer of icing by passage of the band through a supply hopper 1. The lower ends of the front and rear walls 1a, 1b of the hopper 1 are spaced from the band 3 to provide clearances and are preferably fitted with adjustable gates 1c, 1d respectively, the gate 1c determining the thickness of the icing layer on the band, and the band is mounted between a rotatable drum 2, which may be displaceably mounted with respect to the hopper wall 1b, and an adjustable knifeedge 4 so that its underlap 3a is spaced from an inclined biscuit guide plate 9, the latter having a channel 10 or a lateral series thereof into which the biscuits are fed from a hopper or hoppers 15 and each of which is provided with a longitudinal slot 11 to receive a biscuit-raising finger 22. The arrangement is such that, in operation, biscuits will be ejected from the hoppers 15 by pusher bars 17, actuated by an eccentric 20 on a shaft 21, and fed to the channels 10, whereupon the fingers 22 will be raised indirectly by a cam 29 also on the shaft 21, to move the biscuits into contact with the icing layer on the underlap 3a, the biscuits travelling forward with the band 3 until they reach the knife-edge 4 where they will tend to be projected beyond said point against a snubbing band 31; the latter severs their adhesive connection with the icing and pushes them over the edge of an arcuate delivery slideway 34 down which they slide to a collecting conveyer 35. The conveyer 35 may be vibrated by eccentric rollers &c. 36a and an interposed vibrator plate 37 to permit the icing on the biscuits to settle smoothly, an adjustable bar 38 and spring-loaded discs 41 being provided to control the vibrations. According to a modification the icing band is displaced towards a stationary biscuit guide plate. Specification 334,577. [Class 28(i)], is referred to.
