Abstract

Phenols are alkylated with olefins in the liquid phase in presence of a catalyst formed, in the reaction mixture or in one of the components thereof, from zinc oxide and hydrochloric acid gas. The phenols may be phenol, cresols, xylenols, naphthols or phenanthols, and may contain more than one hydroxyl group. The olefins may be a petroleum cracked distillate. The hydrogen chloride is preferably passed through even after the last of the olefin has been added. In an example, phenol is heated with C14-18 olefins in presence of zinc oxide, whilst passing a current of hydrogen chloride gas through the reaction mixture, to give a mixture of di- and mono-alkylated phenols. Specifications 460,435, 469,548, and 473,438 are referred to.
