[Class 51(ii)] Apparatus for distributing the charge in a shaft furnace comprises a set of overlapping, pivoted panels arranged in the form of a ring below the charging bell, the inclinations of the panels to the vertical being adjustable simultaneously by mechanism operable from the exterior of the furnace. In one form, Fig. 1, the apparatus comprises a number of plane, trapezoidal panels 5 pivoted at 7 on a frame 8 and a similar number of V-section panels 6 pivoted to links 11 which are also pivoted on the frame, the edges of the panels 6 overlapping those of the panels 5. The latter are connected by links 12 to a sleeve 13 which may be raised and lowered by means of mechanism operated by a hand-wheel 23 to alter the inclination of the panels. The frame also supports a conical member 25 which deflects the charge on to the panels and protects the mechanism. In a second form, Fig. 3, the links 12 are connected to a member 32 carried by a beam 33 which may be raised and lowered by screw jacks 37, 38 driven through gearing by an electric motor. In a third form, Fig. 7, the panels are suspended from a beam 50 of inverted V-section which encloses a beam 57 carrying a plate 58 engaging rollers 56 on extensions 55 of the panels, the beam 57 being raised and lowered by screw jacks 61.
