Abstract
648,783. Making turbine &c. blades. ATKINSON, J. Jan. 15, 1948, No. 1277. [Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv)] Die - rolling ; cold - rolling.-The root portion of a turbine or compressor blade is formed by passing a part only of a partiallyformed blade between successive pairs of rolls in a direction transverse to the length of a blade, the rolls being spaced so that only one pair engages the blade at a time. A number of partly-formed blades 8 are secured in vertical alignment on a vertical table 9 so that their root portions project into the path of verticallyaligned pairs of freely rotatable rolls 4 carried by a vertically movable ram 1. The rolls are mounted in slides which are biassed to a central position by spring-pressed balls 3. Screws 7 bearing on roll carriers within the slide serve to adjust the pass. The passes between the different pairs of rolls decreases upwardly to effect progressive shaping of the work. In a modification, blades 13 from a magazine 14 are forced through the passes along a horizontal guideway 12, 16 by a ram 15. As shown in Fig. 6, two root-portions 17 may be formed simultaneously and then severed. The rolls and the work are flooded with oil and the process may be further facilitated by previously plating the root portions with a frictionreducing metal such as zinc or cadmium. The rolls may be built up of a number of disc members each independently and freely rotatable.
