Abstract

1,231,190. Rolling. WILKINS & MITCHELL Ltd. 3 Dec., 1968 [13 Dec., 1967], No. 56582/67. Heading B3M. A workpiece is formed by moving it through the roll gap of a pair of forming rolls in which a stop is situated such that the workpiece moves by gravity to the roll pair and is located in the roll gap by means of the stop. A machine for carrying out the method comprises a series of roll pairs 28, 29, 30 and 31 which may be mounted vertically above each other or inclined, preferably at an angle of 45 degrees, to the horizontal so that a workpiece 85 falls by gravity between the roll pairs and is located by stops 78 in the roll gaps. Each roll pair has two stops, one in the form of a cam-operated shutter 40 before the roll pair and the other, 78, being resiliently biased in the roll gap. The stop 78 is moved away by means of a cam member 71 attached to shaft 69 on which a lever 68 carrying the stop is mounted. A member 73 on one of the rolls engages the cam member to move the stop out of the roll gap as the workpiece is gripped by the rolls. If the workpiece tends to overtake the stop then the stop is pushed aside by the workpiece. The workpiece may be turned in guides 57 located between the roll pairs which can be rotated about an axis parallel to the path of the workpieces or about an axis parallel to the roll axes by a mechanism driven synchronously by the roll drive. The shutter-type stops 40 are also operated by a drive synchronous with and preferably derived from the roll drive.
