648,425. Variable-speed gearing. DACIE R. J. BERNADOU, May 5, 1948, No. 12311. Convention date, May 7, 1947. [Class 80(ii)] In an epicyclic variable-speed gear arranged in the hub 3 of a cycle comprising wheels 5, 6, 6<SP>1</SP> rigid with a countershaft 7 journalled in the hub, the wheel 5 meshing with a wheel 1 secured to the sprocket wheel 4 while the wheels 6, 6<SP>1</SP> co-operate with a double non-rotatable wheel 9, 9<SP>1</SP> slidable on the fixed spindle 10 under the control of a cable 11 sc as to mesh with either of the wheels 6, 6<SP>1</SP>, a disc 12, slidable or the spindle 10 and having peri pheral notches guided on the shaft 7 and on a pair of rods 16 secured in the hub, has holes 14 adapted to be engaged by claws 13 on the gear 1 to give direct drive. The disc is pushed to the right by the wheel 9<SP>1</SP> and is returned by springs 17 encircling the rods.
