Abstract
648,171. Control of A.C. motors. WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC INTERNATIONAL CO. Dec. 9, 1948, No. 31889. Convention date, Jan. 15. [Class 38(iii)] A control system for braking an alternating-current motor M comprises a transformer 10 having low voltage terminals connected across two line-terminals of the motor, and having high-voltage terminals connected to a capacitor 12 in series with a rectifier 13, a switch 5 being provided for automatically short-circulating the rectifier when the motor is disconnected from its power-supply. When a push-button 7 is actuated, a contactor C is energized to start the motor, a contact 6 being closed to establish a self-holding circuit. The contact 5 opens to remove a short-circuit from the rectifier 13 and the capacitor 12 is charged at a high voltage from transformer secondary winding 11. When a push-button 8 is depressed to disconnect the motor, the contact 5 closes, the capacitor discharging through a winding 11. A current-impulse is induced in the primary winding 9 and is applied to the motor which is rapidly braked. The winding 11 may be tapped for adjustment of the braking-effect.
