[Class 51(i)] In a steam or hot-water boiler having a fuel supply chamber in which fuel is carried by parallel grate bars below which is a second grate, the upper grate is provided with an ash-removing device in the form of a reciprocatable holder mounted below it and having tooth-shaped scraping members projecting between the bars, passages being provided in the holder and/or scraping members for the flow of a cooling medium. A steam or hot-water boiler has a fuel supply chamber 1 having an upper and a lower grate formed from hollow firebars 2, 7. The upper grate is provided on its underside with an ash-removing device comprising a tubular holder 8 mounted transversely of the firebars 2, and carrying hollow teeth. 9 which project upwards between the firebars 2. The holder 8 projects through the wall at each side of the boiler, one or both projecting ends being connected to a chain mounted on two chain wheels 12, one wheel 12 of which is driven by an electric motor 15 by means of reversible gearing 16 so that the holder 8 is moved longitudinally of the firebars 2 and is reversed in direction at its end positions. The chain is provided with tension springs to reduce stresses. Air from a blower device 5 whch also supplies combustion air into the sides of the fuel chamber 1, reaches the interior of the holder 8 and the teeth 9 by a hose 10 at the side of the boiler and passes to the fuel through openings 21 in the teeth 9. Alternatively the holder 8 and the teeth 9 may be provided with cooling water from the water chamber of the boiler by hoses (not shown), one end of the holder 8 being connected with the lower part of the water chamber and the other end with the upper part of the water chamber.
