A further object of the device is to provide a spray chamber upon a locomotive through which the products of combustion must pass on their way from the heating ilues to the outlet stack, provision being made for drawing off the cinders and dirt deposited Within the chamber from the gases passing therethrough. y
In the drawing forming a part of this application and in which like reference characters refer to corresponding parts throughout the several views,
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a locomotive boiler provided with the present device, parte being broken away,
Fig. 2 is a top plan view of a portion of the locomotive and present improvement in operative position thereon, and
Figs. 3 and 4 are vertical transverse seclines Ill-lli and IV-IV of Fig. 1.
The present device for washing the products of combustion emanating from a irebox is adaptable for locomotive boilers, and
is herein illustrated in connection With such a locomotive 10 having ire tubes 11 and a smoke box 12. A housing 13 is mounted upon the locomotive 10 and has a Washing chamber 1-l: therein, a curved outlet iiue 15 being attached to the forward end of the said housing projecting upwardly Within the vertical smokestack 16 secured to the forward p' rtien of the locomotive 10. The smokestack 16 has a transverse partition 1'? in the nature of a bottom, cutting' o' all communication from the interior of the Specification of Letters Patent.

Application led January 6, 1917. Serial No. 140,879.
The bottoni 1S oi the housing lil smoke box. 13 is V -shaped and has a perforated pipe arranged centrally thereof and extending longitudinally substantially the entire length of the housing, and is provided with a controlling valve 2O tteriorly of the latter` the perforations in the pipe 19 being suinciently large to permit thedraiving of cinders and sediment therethrough 'trom the chamber 14 by means of suction.
A vertical. trough-shaped conduit 21 projects transversely through the housing 13, the same being hit'uiuated at its lower end for straddling the pipe 19 and with i ,s opposite side portions projecting doivnvmrdljf into the locomotive smoke box 12 adap for the passage ot' the products of comhus-- tion therethrough, as i cated by the arrows in lfig. 1 oli the drawing. extends rearwardly alongthe top of the housing 13 und thence downwardly adjacent the rear end thereof Aforming an outlet `mouth or nozzle ji plurality oi paddle wheels 2l are journaled transversely through the housing 13 ivi nin the path ot travel of the products of combustion thi-onu"- 'the said housing 'e'tyveen the outlet an flue.

While the present embodiments are believed to be preferable, minor changes may be made therein without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
What I claim as neu7 is:
A smoke Washer comprising in combination With a locomotive, having a smoke stack cut off from communication therewith, a housing having a washing chamber therein,
`a flue for the products of combustion extending into the washing chamber adjacent one end thereof, the inletv end of said flue being bifurcated and extending into the locomotive `smoke-box, fluid agitating paddles revolubly mounted within the washing chamber, an outlet pipe at the opposite endof the chamber from the entrance end of said flue, the bottom of said housing being inclined downwardly toward the center, a perforated'pipe arranged centrally Within said chamber and straddled by said hifurcated flue, a normally closed eontrollinovalve in the perforated pipeexteriorly o the housing, a fluid inlet pipe tapped into said housing, and connection between said Washer and the outlet of the smoke stack.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
