Abstract
648,105. Vehicle jacks. BODEN-DAVIS, Ltd., BODEN, C., and DAVIS, J. Nov. 24, 1948, No. 30490. [Class 79 (iii)] A screw-operated corner jack of the type used on caravans has its arm mounted on two co-axial pivots spaced apart by a disance not less than a quarter of the length of the arm, whereby the arm can take lateral stresses without the usual separate side stay or stays. As shown, the base of the jack is T-shaped comprising a channel member 1 and angle member 2 welded together. The channel member houses the usual screw 4 operated by a wheel brace applied to the nut 5. The arm 10 is an open triangular lattice girder pivoted at spaced pivots 8 on the angle member 2 and carrying a pivoted foot 15 at its other end. A pair of links 12 connect a nut on the screw 4 to the arm 10, the links being pivoted on a cross member 11 welded to the sides of the arm 10, the cross member 11 comprising a rod stiffened by welding a web along one side thereof. The links 12 may be triangulated instead of parallel, with their ends pivoted at the ends of the cross bar 11 to avoid binding stresses in the latter. The T-shaped frame may be replaced by a triangular sheet metal pressing with flanged edges and stiffening swages therein to take the place of the channel. The arm 10 may be replaced by one of tubular section, or a triangular metal pressing.
