Abstract

<PICT:0647900/III/1> The evaporator 13 of a refrigerating apparatus comprises a shell-and-tube structure, the tubes 26 having external extruded fins which make the ratio between the outside and inside areas of the tubes more than three to one, the cross-sectional area of that portion of the shell in which the tube bundle is located being at least 40 per cent of the total inside cross-sectional area of the shell. The compressor 11 draws vaporized refrigerant from the evaporator 13 through eliminators 19 where entrained liquid is removed, and discharges the compressed refrigerant through a pipe 22 to the condenser 12 which has inclined baffles 23, 31. Condensed refrigerant passes to the lower part of the evaporator through spaced openings in a plate 16. The fins are extruded on the tubes by the apparatus described in U.S.A. Specification 1,865,575.
