Refrigerating, compression machines and processes for. - In a liquid cooler or evaporator for refrigerating purposes comprising a battery of pipes enclosing tubes through which brine or other liquid to be cooled passes, the pipes are inclined to the horizontal, the ammonia or other refrigerant is admitted at the base of the elevated end of the battery, and the upper parts of both ends of the battery are connected to a horizontal receiver or gas-liberating chamber, so that the ebullition of the refrigerant causes it to circulate continuously and rapidly. The pipes a are connected to top and bottom headers b, c provided with conduits d, and condensed refrigerant is admitted through an expansion valve e and pipe f. The conduits d are connected to the horizontal receiver g by pipes h, i and a stop valve j. The receiver g may be provided with a level-indicating glass k. The liquid to be cooled passes through tubes n within the pipes a in a zig-zag course from the inlet o<1> at the top to the outlet p<1> at the bottom, chamber 3, 5, 7, 9 being formed in cover plates o, p to connect the ends of adjacent sets of tubes n. There may be one or more tubes n in each pipe a, but preferably seven. The gas or vapour from the chamber g may pass to the compressor through a tubular chamber t containing a coil s through which the refrigerant passes from the condenser to the valve e. By this means the gas is dried and the refrigerant cooled.
