Abstract

647,652. Cleaning metals; coating with metals. ARMCO INTERNATIONAL CORPORATION. Dec. 8, 1947, No. 32375. [Class 82(ii)] In coating metal articles with aluminium, aluminium alloys or other metals liable when molten to produce an adhesive surface scum, the articles are passed through a protective atmosphere into a bath of the molten coating metal, alkali metal.vapour being formed or introduced adjacent the surface of the bath and between such surface and the point of introduction of the protective atmosphere. Strip metal is passed through a hood 4 to which a reducing atmosphere, e.g. cracked ammonia, is admitted at 6. The hood 4 terminates in a bell 5, dipping into molten aluminium 2 in a bath 1, and having a re-entrant portion 10 forming with the sides of the bell an open-top container 11 into which sodium is introduced through the valves or gates 13, 14. Potassium or lithium may replace sodium; wire sheets or individual articles may be coated; and the base metal may be iron or steel Specification 453,803 is referred to.
