Abstract

234,969. Hooper, L. D. May 3, 1924. Casting.s other than metal; treatment of castings.-Deposits of silicon or mixtures thereof, including alloys and silicides, are sprayed on to surfaces to form a non-electrolytic, anticorrosive coating. The spraying apparatus may be of known type, such as gas blow-pipe, or electric arc or furnace, with or without air blast. The silicon &c. may be projected at high velocity under high pressure, when the particles thereof may be in solid form; if lower velocities and pressures are used, the silicon &c. is heated to a pasty or molten state. The surface to be coated may require cleaning as by sand-blasting and may also be locally heated during coating. When the high velocity and high pressure method is not used, a reducing atmosphere such as nitrogen or carbon-monoxide is preferably used instead of air-blast. When the surface to be treated is unsuitable for direct deposit, a deposit of other material such as lead, tin, copper or aluminium may be first applied, or a flux, such as an alkaline metal or its halide, aluminate, borate, oxide or hydroxide, or aluminium or zinc halide, may be incorporated with the silicon &c. The deposits may be detached from the surfaces coated and form articles per se.
