Abstract

Hydrophilic sheet materials such as bands, films, or pellicles of regenerated cellulose, water-swellable cellulose ethers or esters, gelatine, casein, or water-swellable synthetic resins such as polyvinyl alcohol or hydrolysed polyvinyl acetate, are plasticized and also rendered fire resistant by impregnating them with a solution of guanidine thiocyanate. The solution may be aqueous or organic provided that it wets the material. In an example, a sheet or film of regenerated cellulose in the gel state is drawn through an aqueous bath containing a mixture of ammonium thiocyanate and guanidine carbonate (guanidine thiocyanate being formed by interaction), and is then squeezed and dried so that the dry film contains 17 per cent of guanidine thiocyanate. The sheet ignites when a match is applied but the flame is quickly extinguished when the match is removed. In other examples, sheets of an alkali-soluble water-insoluble cellulose ether and sheets of casein are treated with aqueous solutions of guanidine thiocyanate. The impregnating solution may contain additional softening agents, fire retardants, and hygroscopic salts or liquids, e.g. calcium chloride, lithium acetate, citrate, salicylate, or acetyl salicylate; potassium acetate, lactate, or propionate; sodium lactate, glycerine, urea malate, amylamine formate, propylamine acetate, ethylene glycol, diethylene glycol, sorbitol, mono-triethanolamine malate, mono-or tri-ethanolamine hydrogen phosphate, amino propane-2,3-diol hydrogen phosphate, formamide, alkyl guanidine phosphates, and alkylolamine guanidine phosphates. The guanidine thiocyanate may be obtained by heating ammonium thiocyanate at 180-190 DEG C. for 20-25 hours. The yield may be increased by adding thiourea to the reaction mass. Ammonia may be passed through the molten mass during heating. The salt may also be obtained by treating guanidine with thiocyanic acid, or by mixing solutions of ammonium thiocyanate and guanidine carbonate. After the hydrophilic material has been impregnated with such a solution, a reaction takes place as the material passes over the heated drying rolls, ammonia and carbon dioxide being removed by volatilization. Specifications 569,040 and 569,383 are referred to.
