[Class 87 (ii)] Apparatus for moulding clay tiles comprises a rectangular die-box and top and bottom dies adapted to press the tile between them, and is characterized in that two opposite sides of the die-box are longer than the corresponding sides of the bottom die, and the top die is formed with a depending projection whose inside surface is shaped to the rounded or other contour required to be given to the tile, the projection on the top die entering a cavity in the die-box not occupied by the bottom die when the pressing takes place. The die-box consists of mild steel members 11 having hard steel liners 11a, and the bottom die 10 has an upwardlysloping lip or ramp 10b. The die 10 is raised into the position shown, and the box 11 charged with material from the sliding carrier of an automatically mechanically-controlled press of conventional type (not shown), which carrier moves from right to left in the drawing. A flexible flap or strip 14 supports the charge and prevents an undue amount of material from falling through the space 12 into a shoot underneath. After charging, the top die 13 descends, the projection 13a enters the space 12, pushing out the lodged dust on flap 14, and the tile is pressed. As the die 13 returns the bottom die 10 lifts the tile slightly, which is ejected by the forward re-charging motion of the carrier and the lifting action of the ramp 10b. The die-box may contain a number of bottom dies to co-operate with a corresponding number of dies on the press plunger.
