Abstract
647,092. Syphon-discharge water-waste-pre venters. MAGUIRE, F. C. March 25, 1948, No. 8741. [Class 26] In a flushing cistern of the kind having two handles. one producing full flush and the other partial flush, and having a valve-controlled air inlet in the syphon operated by the appropriate external handle, the air admission valve is maintained closed by a weighted lever movable by a handle to permit opening of the valve. As shown, applied to a low level cistern, the upward leg 33 of a syphon has an air inlet 41, above the normal water level, closed by a valve mounted on a leg on a float 43. The float 43 is mounted on an arm 47 pivoted at 48 and carrying at its other end a bucket 50 having a lateral flange 51 and normally below the water level. Operation of the full-flush lever 25 causes complete discharge of the cistern, the valve being kept closed by the weight of the full bucket 50 acting through the arm 47. On operation of the partial flush lever 35, the bucket 50 is raised, by the action of an arm 40 and pin 52, above the water level and emptied; at the same time syphonic action is started. When the water level has reached a predetermined value the upthrust on the float is insufficient to maintain the valve in the closed position, the syphon is broken and the discharge stopped. The partial flush lever may be mounted on a shaft co-axial with the full flush lever and weighted to be normally in a different angular position from that of the full flush lever. The bucket may be arranged to be filled slowly on being water-borne. The air inlet may be below the normal water level and the partial flush lever operate first to open the valve and then to initiate flush. When applied to high level cisterns, two crank arms may be fitted, the partial flush handle slipping over the chain or rod of the full flush handle. The partial discharge handle may carry a counter weight to operate only when the handle is manipulated with sufficient energy to operate the syphon. The Provisional Specification also states that in the case of a low level cistern the bucket may be so designed that its inner side wall becomes horizontal after the rocking lever has moved through about 45 degrees.
